Three Things About Me

  • MTV is my uber-guilty pleasure.  Seriously- when people badmouth reality TV, I will be the first to tell you it’s all scripted trash, but, I also can’t. stop. watching.  I’m currently watching the 74th Annual Hunger Games The Challenge: War of the Worlds (and missing Johnny Bananas and CT terribly, but good riddance to Bear).
  • I once attended Johnson & Wales University for Equestrian Business Management.  I lived on a farm in Ohio- my aunt’s, not a random farm- the year prior and practiced dressage on a horse named Goober.  He was a gorgeous half-arabian gelding, and definitely a Goober.  Sometimes I feel bad I dropped out, but other times I feel like I dodged a bullet.  No idea what I was expecting to do with that degree.
  • At least once I day, I feel the need to arm myself with a tinfoil hat.  Okay, I don’t really wear a tinfoil hat, but seriously…  Google Home and Alexa are pretty much my worst nightmares (I’m still waiting for SK to write this story).

Bailey’s Questions

What book have you been wanting to read, but keep putting off?

SO MANY!  I have 138 books on my “owned-but-haven’t-read” shelf in GoodReads.  Most notable on the list: Blood of Elves by Andrzej Sapkowski, The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell, War of the Wolf, also by Bernard Cornwell, and 11/22/63 by Stephen King.  All favorite authors.  Definitely afraid of expecting too much.

Do you dog-ear your pages and write in your books, or do you try to keep them pristine?

It depends on the book honestly.  If I bought it new in hardcover, or got it from the library I try to keep it pristine.  If I bought it used (which are my favorite kinds, because it feels like sharing the love between readers) dog eared pages are okay.  Writing in a book is a huge no-no for me regardless.  Feels like blasphemy.  (I’m cringing thinking about it right now.)

What do you do when you find yourself in a reading slump?

This actually happened to me not too long ago.  (Look at the November/December months on my blog- really not a lot going on.)  First, I read like the opening five chapters of everything I own.  Briefly considered re-reading a favorite (and didn’t), did change genres entirely, changed format (audio vs. ebook, etc.), and finally just settled on reading shorter fiction for most of January.  Tor’s free short fiction newsletter helped a lot, so did N.K. Jemisin’s How Long ’til Black Future Month?, graphic novels, etc.  Also buddy reads!  Because FOMO.

We all know the book is almost always better, but what movie adaptation did you really like?

I have a lot of these too!  I love movies almost as much as I love books.  Favorites include (in no particular order): JURASSIC PARK (but not The Lost World, that was a shitty adaptation), The Green Mile, Gone Girl was brilliant in all the ways, Keira Knightley’s Pride & Prejudice (though this one really isn’t as good as the book), The Gunslinger *ducks rotten tomatoes* (I’m sorry but the movie was great compared to the monotony of that first book, plus Idris Elba *drools*), The Hunger Games (I actually haven’t read this book *ducks more rotten tomatoes* but I love the movie!).

(Bonus funny question) Would you rather fight a 100 duck-sized horses or 1 horse-sized duck?

I mean- I’m probably a goner either way, but I’m a horse lover, and horses are pretty delicate already, so I gotta go with the horse-sized duck.

My Questions

  • What’s one book everyone else seemed to love except you?  What didn’t you love about it?
  • What’s one classic book you’re embarrassed to admit never having read? Alternatively, are there any books you’re embarrassed to have read?
  • Do you set yearly reading goals?  What are they and do you meet those goals?
  • If you could add one book to every high school English curriculum, what would it be and why?
  • (Bonus question) Cersei Lannister, Sauron, Cthulhu, Pennywise, Professor Moriarty, Prince Jorg Ancrath, The Shrike, The Joker, and Darth Vader team up to form a EVIL alliance.  Who is the hero to defeat them all?

I Nominate:

Acqua @ Acquadimore Books | Paul @ Paul’s Picks | Monika @ Lauregalie Book Reviews  | Alice @ The Realm of Books | Jocelyn @ A Little Nerd Told Me | Tammy @ Books, Bones, & Buffy | Aaron @ Swords & Spectres | Drew @ The Tattoed Book GeekKat @ Here There Be Dragons | The Dacian She-Wolf | Nadine @ Nad’s Book Nook | Imyril @ One MoreOn My Bookshelf

If I didn’t nominate you, but you’d like to participate, please consider yourself nominated!  Drop me a note below and I’ll add you to the links above!  And I know some of you blog a lot harder than me, so also no pressure to participate!

  1. Thanks for the tag, Sarah😁 I have to agree with you about The Hunger Games, such a good movie, but honestly the book is pretty awesome too (the movie does a great job of following the book faithfully).

    • You’re welcome! That’s good to know – maybe I can check it out afterall. I always feel so guilty for not having read it – but there are so few movies put out these days that I could watch multiple times.. Hunger Games happens to be one of them.

  2. Short fiction (especially the free short fiction I find online) is something that helps me a lot during slumps too. Even if I end up not liking it, I won’t have wasted too much of my time. And I feel the same way about writing in books… which is why I love ebooks, they let me annotate if I need to (it helps me a lot with ARCs) without making me feel like I’m damaging something.
    Thanks for tagging me!

    • You’re welcome! And YES to the noting function of ebooks! Not just because I can’t make notes without damage- but I love that GoodReads takes what I highlight and stores it somewhere convenient for me to refer back to.

  3. Such a great post! I also love that you’re into reality tv! I remember trying to hide my love for trashy MTV shows, but now I just don’t care anymore. I just recently rewatched The Hills and I’m low key excited they’re rebooting the show.

  4. Blog a lot harder, ha, blog hard, the story of a book blogger.😂

Some great answers and some cool questions. Thanks for the tag, I have to admit that I’m rather shonky at keeping up with and doing tags and when I do remember to do them well, I tend not to answer them to seriously, think funny filth answers though as you love trash, sorry, reality TV you should be fine with that.😂😜

      • Sorry to bother you. I’m a bit odd.. a book has to really wow me to keep me reading. But reading people’s blogs about reading and their opinions are completely intriguing.

      • Ha- no bother at all. I started this blog because I like to chat about books. Whether you agree or disagree with my personal opinions- I’m happy to chat. What’s you’re favorite book?

      • The first book that ever kept me wanting more was To Kill A Mockingbird. So much better than the movie!!…

        Controversial, yes.. but the Bible

And I actually like reading encyclopedias

        Liked by 1 person

      • I love To Kill a Mockingbird. I’ll be honest and say I do not read the Bible… or anything much religious for that matter. The encyclopedia thing is pretty cool- I actually read them a lot as a kid.

But I have to admit- I’m a little at a loss for what to recommend you! I don’t read *many* classics.

      • I’m kind of a hard pick when it comes to books. 😕 because it’s all about my mood and how it moves me.

Now I do love me some poetry!

      • I’ve actually thought about that!! Yer smart 😁

You’re a sci-fi person huh? Kind of off topic but have you watched The IT Crowd? British humor most sci-fi folks I know love it. I’m a nerd. Im proud of it mostly.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Haha- yes big on Sci-fi- but I haven’t heard of the IT crowd. I’ll have to see if I can track it down. I will say I’m much more likely to read sci-fi or watch a movie than I am to watch it on TV. I liked The XFiles and Lost, but those are really the only SF shows I can think of off the top of my head that I watched regularly.

      • How about: The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal? You could check out her free short story “The Lady Astronaut” on Tor.com for free. It’s an excellent prologue and takes 20 minutes to read.

If you might like something philosophical, you could try The Just City by Jo Walton.

      • If you decide to read them I’d love to know what you think! Even if you don’t make it all the way through.

Some people just aren’t readers and that’s okay. You might enjoy a graphic novel or two. They are making a lot of them these days, and they aren’t all super heroes and comics. I think they recently did one for The Handmaid’s Tale. I personally loved Joe Hills Locke & Key (but they are both pretty dark).

      • I like something that’s real. And makes you feel. I don’t know if I’m making any sense at all here, but To Kill A Mockingbird for instance, the spunky girl and the plot was totally believable. Boo Radley was a guy that could’ve lived down the street. I think that’s why I liked it.

      • I think there is enough realness in The Calculating Stars to keep you interested. It’s an alternate history, but the characters feel very real, and it tackles a few very relevant modern issues. And I would be surprised if you could read The Lady Astronaut without feeling something (or The Calculating Stars, but The Lady Astronaut is exceptionally powerful).

I don’t read a lot of contemporary literature, so I’m coming up short on recs. Most of the contemporary stuff I read is also pretty dark. Stephen King writes some amazing “average Joes/Janes” But his subject matter is generally sci-fi/supernatural.

I’m pretty much the opposite, the farther I can get from everyday life the happier I am, but I do like historical fiction precisely because parts of it are real.

You might enjoy reading memoirs. One brilliant one I read last year was called Yes, Chef by Marcus Samuelsson. He’s a food network Chef but his story was pretty amazing.

      • I’m definitely going to check them out!

I’m not a Stephen King guy… I hate to say it but he’s became like the Fender Stratocaster or plain bread to me. Everyone has a thing for him but just not my cup of coffee… no offense.

        I do love history books!!

Let me know when you’re tired of me lol! I can be extremely talkative..

        Liked by 1 person

      • None taken- Stephen King isn’t for everyone. I do think his plain bread style is part of his appeal for me. Easy to digest. I think his characters have more life than most others.

For History- I would recommend Bernard Cornwell. I love his Last Kingdom series, but as I understand it, some readers thought Uhtred was unlikeable (with good reason). I don’t mind this but some do. A lot of other readers also love his Richard Sharpe series. Those might be worth checking out too.

And I am not tired of you- but it is late where I am, so if I fall asleep, don’t be offended. Comment away- I will respond when I can!

Lol!! In that case, I’ll let you get to bed! It’s been super awesome chatting with you!
