Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is a freebie. I decided to go with series I’ve started and haven’t finished yet. Usually when I find a series I love I read them all back to back. For whatever reason- these are series I enjoyed and still want to finish, but stalled on somehow.
Tensorate by J.Y. Yang – I enjoyed The Black Tides of Heaven, but I think the reason I stalled out on this series was that it felt complete as it was. I also wasn’t thrilled about the character featured in book two. Regardless, these aren’t a huge time commitment, and I’d still like to finish… Someday.
The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski – (Sorry- I can’t figure out how to link to the english version of the series.) So I will say- that while I haven’t been disappointed with the Witcher (I adore Geralt) it doesn’t quite live up to the masterpiece that is the game, which is why I think I haven’t continued.
The Grail Quest by Bernard Cornwell – I have no good reason for stalling on this series. I loved Thomas of Hookton and I love how the little easter eggs Cornwell left for it in Agincourt.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown – This is a series I never finished because the stupid bookstore didn’t have a copy on hand of Golden Son and had to order it. In the meantime I picked up three other books and never got back to it two weeks later when it finally came in.
The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner – This series hasn’t been completed yet because I miss Eugenides. Everything about these stories is pretty simple, and without his POV it’s been difficult to get into the rest of the books.
The Dark Tower by Stephen King – Not even going to lie- The Gunslinger is just not very good. I’ve been told the series gets better, but it hasn’t helped me get to it any faster.
A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin – Yeah, yeah. I’ll get to them someday. Maybe when they are finished?!
Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufmann and Jay Kristoff – I enjoy these stories because of the format (pictures, texts, wiki files) but that’s the only real appeal for me, which is why I haven’t been in any rush to read the third book.
The Bannerless Saga by Carrie Vaughn – Book one, Bannerless, was a rare five star read for me. I’m not sure why I never continued with The Wild Dead. I think it’s another case of book one being complete enough to act as a stand alone.
Planetfall by Emma Newman – I know why I haven’t moved forward with these other books yet and it’s because I was less than pleased with the ending of Planetfall. I didn’t get the sense it was a question to be answered in later books, it felt like a standard issue non-ending. I’m willing to give book two a try, because people say such good things about these books, but another ending like that and I am done with this series.
Centenal Cycle by Malka Ann Older – I love this series and I think they are way underhyped for what you get. They’re diverse, and feature all kinds of cool tech with some bad-ass women protagonists. The only reason I never got to State Tectonics was because I read the first two with a group of buddies and we somehow never ended up setting a date for book three.
What about you? What series have you started and not finished?
Yeah, I wasn’t a big fan of The Gunslinger either. You’re not alone there.

I think a lot of people weren’t- just not much going on, but the movie and other readers give me hope that it does get better.

I didn’t love Planetfall either, but the rest of the series is so much better, in my opinion! But seriously, the Dark Tower series is one of my all time favorites. I don’t remember much about The Gunslinger, because it’s been years since I read the books, but I read all seven back to back and it was such a great reading experience for me.

That’s reassuring about planetfall! Most readers just seem to love all the books but I was so upset with that ending. And if o read book 2 for gunslinger and love it- I will definitely read them back to back.

If you’re waiting for the Game of Thrones books to finish before you finish them….you’ll be waiting till you’re old and gray at this rate.

Haha- yeah I know. I’m not necessarily waiting until their finished- but given Martin isn’t in a rush to write them, I’m not in much of a rush to read them either.

If you enjoyed the Illuminae series, definitely check the last book out! I loved the format as well. I need to start Game of Thrones at some point, it just feels like a huge investment.
Great post!

It is a huge investment!! Especially considering we might never know the end.

Martin if you have a TTT post please let me know- I tried following your comment back to your site but it leads to a dead end (I’m in the WordPress App- I’ll try to check out later when I’m at a computer!).

Oh man… there are so many series I need to finish… 😉
I’m currently in the middle of the first Tensorate book, and I’ll be curious to see if I have the same feeling about continuing with the series as you did. That’s the way I felt about Mark Lawrence’s One Word Kill: book one felt like the perfect ending, so why would I keep reading?
I also need to start the Red Rising, Dark Tower, and Illuminae series. Thanks for the warning about The Gunslinger, though. I’ll keep my expectations low when I get around to that one.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing what you think of Tensorate! I just felt like (and maybe I wasn’t understanding) the other characters POV wouldn’t have much to contribute and that there wasn’t enough tension built into the subplots to make me keep going. Illuminate is fun mostly for the formatting – I definitely recommend getting a hard copy if you can find it.

I’ve been putting off Illuminae partly because I never remember to look for it when I’m in an actual bookstore, and I don’t want the ebook copy of it. 🙂
With Tensorate, I’m having issues feeling like I’m understanding even this first book, so we’ll see…. 😉 (I like it, just often feel confused.)

Yes I often felt confused during tensorate too, but I think it made sense by the end. It’s so quick its worth pushing through I think.

I really like the worldbuilding and setting, too!

I need to get to Red Rising – I’ve owned the first book for years, and I’m just never really in the mood for it. 😦 I really love the Illuminae series, but I found Obsidio a lack-luster sequel. *cries* I found the main relationship toxic, and some parts of the plot made me angry/uncomfortable – and not in a “that’s so well-written, I’m invested” way, rather in a “wow, idk what they were thinking writing that.” Either way, I do hope you’ll get to all these books, and enjoy them! 🙂

Oof- doesn’t sound like Obsidio agreed with you at all! though I admit you have me curious about the relationship- especially since these are YA. I appreciate the heads up though!

I feel like I know so little about The Witcher, but I see there’s a movie coming and it seems so popular! I guess I missed the game somehow. I’ve even see cool fan art for it on Artstation and DevianArt and whatnot. And I’ve been meaning to try Cornwell for a while.

Greg you should try all of those things!! Do you game? I know I missed a few of the Witcher games because they were XBox/PC exclusives and I only really played on PS at the time, but the Witcher 3 is well worth playing, even if you don’t know the lore!

I do game, and the Witcher seems super popular! I don’t know why I never played it. I will definitely check out Witcher 3 though!

Haha- do you like the show? I think if you like the show they are probably worth reading. I read the first book and despite being 800 pages long don’t think it took too long.

I have seen most of it – I went in a year long slump after the third season so that was a bit disappointing, so I am rewatching from the beginning

Well I read book one- and they are pretty interchangeable. I didn’t feel either format offered anything more over the other. Except the show is less of a time commitment and more visually stunning.
I’ve heard they deviate the further you go in the series… but still. I’m not a die hard fan of the show so my motivation is lacking.

I definitely need to pick back up on GRRM’s ASOIAF series. I’m almost done with the last book (well, not the last-last obviously but the last that was “recently” published) but I don’t want to read too far and then have to wait for the next decade before he releases the next book haha! Also, oh goodness, the covers for those J.Y. Yang books are really pretty.

They are really pretty!! And I think at this point most people just hope GRRM even gets to finish at all. (Hasn’t it already been a decade since the last book?!)

I need to start in on the Witcher series for sure. 🙂
