Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s topic is a book cover freebie. I’ve been so winter focused and we’re just getting rid of snow after a week where I am, so I’ve been craving books that take me to a warmer place. Even if that warmer place isn’t actually any place you want to be. A lot of these are super recognizable so I’m not going to break them all down- just leave them here to warm your day. (Unless of course you’re in the southern hemisphere, in which case I still hope you find something you might like to read.)

So many great books! Jurrasic Park is (of course) a classic, and Laymon’s The Island was a pleasant surprise, but I’m so happy to see The Lost City of the Monkey God and The Lost City. A bunch of others I clearly need to look into…

There’s a lot on this list I also want to read still! I love the Jurassic Park books, The Ruins was good too. As far as settings go, the one in Black Leopard Red Wolf was probably one of the most unique. Glad you found some new books for your TBR though!

I need to re-read Jurassic Park. I know I read it, but I don’t really recall what I thought of it. Other than that, though, the only jungle themed book I can remember reading is Heart of Darkness, and I don’t remember what I thought about that one, either.

I LOVE Jurassic Park, movies and books. You should definitely re-read it! It’s not much different from the movie but it’s a lot of fun. The Lost World is really good too- better than the movie even.

When I read the book, I wasn’t really into thrillers, so I suspect I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I could have. I don’t know if I ever saw The Lost World or not, though. I know I didn’t read that one.

Well- if you aren’t into thrillers they might not be for you? But they are still a lot of fun just for the dinosaurs! I loved The Lost World personally, thought Sarah Harding was Awesome in the book.

I like thrillers more now than I did then, so I do want to read at least the first book again! To be honest, though, I’m not really sure why I loved the movie as much as I did given how much of a wimp I was at the time. 😉 (I’m still a wimp, but I’ve gotten better.)

When you really pay attention to the movie- you’ll realize that there actually isn’t any gore in the first one. I think that’s what makes Spielberg such a genius. In our heads it’s super gory, but all we really saw was spurt of fake blood, and heard a crunch and a scream. I think it shows maybe one scene of the lawyer getting eaten, but not even because he was disguised by the outhouse. So you don’t end up seeing it. I don’t think that’s true of later movies in the Jurassic Park franchise. I can’t remember if that’s true of Jurassic World or not.

I don’t remember if Jurassic World was that way either, but I know I saw it. In my head, I want to say I think you see more gore in Jurassic World than in Jurassic Park.

Yeah.. I think that was one of my disappointments with Jurassic World. Jurassic Park is suspenseful almost more for what you never saw than what you did see. In Jurassic World I know at the end there is a mosasauraus scene and the pterodactyls grab quite a few people.. in Jurassic Park, you think it’s gory but it’s more you know what happened from the sound effects and screaming than really seeing anything. (Although now that I’m thinking about it- there was that one scene with the raptors and an arm…). Either way, one of my favorite movies!

Jurassic Park did the suspense angle better than most movies, really. And with the dinosaurs being puppets rather than CGI, you really believed they were there. (Yeah, that a scene with the raptors and the arm is definitely bloody.)

I have The River of Teeth on my 2020 TBR and hope it doesn’t disappoint. Did you ever read the follow-up novella? One Goodreads reviewer wrote “needs more hippos.” LOL.

The movie is a pale imitation of the book. They changed so much and it’s not remotely the same. I enjoyed the movie, but for very different reasons than I enjoyed the book (because I’m that weirdo who actually likes B Monster Movies). The book is significantly better! And way more literary than the movie made it seem.

I’ve only read The Ruins off your list, but it definitely took me to a warmer place. I also read it while on a beach vacation, so that book is seared in my memory. 😉

Don’t worry about it- I know I missed a bunch of yours too. I just got behind on my blog reading with all the craziness of the holidays and what not.
And yes to more Crichton always! I’m planning on reading two of his novels this year (maybe 3)- Sphere, Micro, and Congo.
