Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.
Title: The Evening and the Morning
Author: Ken Follett
Publisher: Viking
Genre: Historical Fiction
Length: 720 Pages
Release Date: September 15, 2020
Blurb: It is 997 CE, the end of the Dark Ages, and in England one man’s ambition to make his abbey a centre of learning will take the reader on an epic journey into a historical past rich with ambition and rivalry, death and birth, love and hate.
Thirty years ago, Ken Follett published his most popular novel, The Pillars of The Earth, which has sold over 27 million copies worldwide.
Now, this novel, the prequel, will take the readers on an epic journey that will end where The Pillars of The Earth begins…
Why I’m Excited For It: This week I discovered that there are not one, but two new books in beloved series that are releasing this fall (the other one I’m saving for a future post). The Pillars of the Earth and its sequels are some of my favorite books of all time.
They feature large casts swept up in endless drama, romance, scheming villains, the roller coaster ride of the character’s triumphs and defeats… I’ve often described these books as medieval soap operas, all centered around the same fictional church and town.
Now it seems this book is set during the Viking age, and you already know how I feel about that. It’s the prequel I didn’t know I needed.
Have you read any of The Pillars of the Earth books? Are you as excited for this as I am?
Great pick – I saw the news about this one last week. It’s been ages since I read The Pillars of the Earth books, but they were a fantastic glimpse into the past. Definitely looking forward to this.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one! I didn’t know they were even planning this. I thought they were done after A Column of Fire, so I almost fell out of my chair when I saw it. I’m really hoping Viking approves my request for an eGalley, but not holding my breath.

I’ve never read this series, but you’re tempting me. I didn’t even know Ken Follett was still around! Lol

I know Historical Fiction is a little out of genre for us- but I love this series so much. The last one was a little disappointing but the first two books are well worth the time investment. You could maybe even start with this one since it’s a prequel!

This isn’t a series I was ever interested in — I’m not much into Historical Fiction when there’s no magic involved. (I don’t think there’s magic involved?) Viking fiction does sound interesting, though.

No magic- it’s straight historical fiction. And history is actually my first love- but if you like dramatic, good vs. evil stories- this is 100% that. You might try it someday, it’s sort of a modern classic!

It does sound interesting! I’ll have to keep it in mind for good historical fiction.

I’ll never forget picking up the first one on a rainy day. I read about half of it in one sitting! Can’t wait for this:)

Me too! I don’t want to say it’s a long way to September- but it’s a long way to September.

I didn’t like it, to be honest, but then there aren’t many series that I like 😅 I think it had pretty decent reviews, though!

Eh. I’ll skip it then. I think it’s a better as a book. There’s you a lot you miss in a visual medium.

That’s my problem too! I find it hard to find an adaptation that’s actually even near the levels of the novel it’s based on (if I like the novel, that is 😉), not to mention one that would surpass it!

I read the first one in the series – and since it was a long time ago, memory is a bit blurred, but I remember it with fondness, although I never read the sequels. My niece did, however, and loves the saga, so I will surprise her with the news of a prequel book: I’m sure she’ll be very happy about it 🙂

Yes! They are a little formulaic so I’m sure she knows what to expect- but the characters always feel fresh.
